Green Bean Sprouts: My Lil' Shop of Horrors

Recently I’ve been getting my green-fingers to work, ever since an accidental onion came to life with its sprout (or whatever you call it). So I thought it might be a good idea to see how well it grows if I just fed it with water. Yeps, hydroponics is the way to go.
Actually I was just too lazy to get some soil and plant it in and besides its gonna get real messy, so well, it is a great experiment to see how well it grows with water alone.
Turn out quite well after about 6 weeks. Still I felt that its growth could have been stunned somewhat as it seems to be growing slower than it should have been. I’ve been to the supermarket and saw that those spring onions can grow quite a fair bit, and pity my spring onion hasn’t reach that stage…yet.
Then I went on to try my hands on growing sprouts from green beans. I mean I love bean sprouts and they can be purchased in bulk. So I had a bag of green beans and I thought it’ll be great to have my own garden of sprouts I can just eat off whenever I want (makes me feel like a green giant Fi Fi Foe Fum I smell green bean sprouts arrgh!!!). So I had them placed in an ice cube container, 5 seeds in each holder with cotton wool as base. Water them daily and for the third week this is how it looks like:

And I’m beginning to wonder if I can eat them at all?!? See, I thought the green bean sprouts were supposed to be like these:

But mine has large leaves, hairy stem, and is pinkish red in color. So what is going on?? My best guess is that the green beans that I have are a different kind of green beans…right? I mean I think they do have many different categories of green beans?
Still I decide against eating them as I’m no herbalist and sprouts are cheap anyway. I’ll just continue to grow them and see what becomes of them… there goes my salad…
