A minor car accident - A major life experience

We managed to get the bumper of my car fixed after the last accident for like $175. And that doesn’t even mean a new bumper, it just means labour and skill where the guy would beat the dent out and mould it back using heating equipment and repaint it. I thought it was pretty expensive for a job like that which apparently they must’ve done it numerous times before. The job took about 6 hours before we can use it again, so we decided to spend the time at a friend’s place that’s rather near to the repair shop.
I was pretty beat coz I’ve only slept for less than 3 hours, and less than 4 hours the night before. Anyway promised my friend to fix something up for them and I set about working on it just so I wouldn’t fall asleep.
Right about 1:30pm we called the mechanic to check if we can get the car, and he said yeah. But we figured we couldn’t get there coz my friend’s car couldn’t start. So through a bit of string-pulling, we got him to drive the car to us instead which he agreed.
The car arrived as it previously was before the accident. The repair looks acceptable, and doesn’t really look like its been bumped before. So because my girlfriend was in a hurry, we decided to just get the hell out because we would have to drive the mechanic back to his workshop first before she can drive herself to work. Right as we were preparing to set off, I adjusted the passenger seat so that there’s sufficient leg room for the guy to sit behind, while my girl friend was trying to start the car while she was outside of the car. Just when you think we had repaired the car to its normal state, the car suddenly surged forward pulling me and her along with it. I didn’t know what happened, and neither did she as I recalled her shouting “What happened?!?” My first instinct was to try and stop the car with all my strength as I struggled by hold on to the car. By then I’ve already heard a bang followed by more undesirable noises of mayhem that can only mean your car’s getting wrecked. In those split seconds, I analyzed that:
1) I couldn’t stop the car by my strength alone
2) The car was heading towards my friend’s Mercedes Benz
3) I have to head into the car to pull the handbrake.
Which I did. I buried my face on the passenger seat for what seems to be eternity telling myself this can’t be happening, this must surely be a bad bad dream! Realising that my car was probably jinxed, I got up to seek explanation of what had happened. I asked my girl friend what happened and she said she just started the car when it surged forward. I asked the mechanic (who was the last person to drive it) and he said he left the clutch in meaning to say it was engaged in the 1st gear and he didn’t even pull the handbrake up. My first thought would be to shout at the top of my lungs what kinda retarded person would leave the clutch in and not even pull the handbrake??! He go on to say that he always did it like that… I calmed myself not to blame anybody and seek to see what damage it had done and what I can do about it.
Luckily the Benz was fine. The car had hit the rim and by then I had pulled the handbrake. What was serious was the pillar of the roof sheltering the cars broke and my car suffered another dent on the driver’s side door and more scratches and paint marks on the bumper and car body. To describe these is almost heart-wrenching. We just couldn’t believe this kinda thing would’ve happened, much less it had just been repaired.
Well, we sent the mechanic who doesn’t pull his handbrake back to his workshop and was still surprised he didn’t even bother to claim part of the responsibility. What he did was like a trap to the next driver. My girl friend sobbed in the car out of shock and grief. I tried my best to console her but I guess she already knew it was just downright unfortunate that it has to happen to her…again. Yes…she was the driver who wrecked the car the first time.
